Who
are Phoenix rotors

Phoenix Rotors model helicopter club was formed in the
late summer of 2003. we were formed out of the need for a
“dedicated” helicopter club in the Nottingham area. We were
only a very small group of helicopter flyers with no where
to enjoy our hobby at that time, we had been in many of the
“local” clubs and found that the flying fields did not cater
for our needs. So we made a “momentous decision” to form our
own club and run it for the benefit of the growing interest
of helicopter flyers. We are governed by the national body
of the British Model Flying Association being members of the
B.M.F.A gives us third party insurance of up to £5 million.
We have a 2 acre green field flying site near Farnsfield
just north of Nottingham the site has full planning
permission for RC model use and we will shortly have a club
cabin onsite as well as use of a toilet very close by. We
also meet every Tuesday evening at the Arnold working men's
club from roughly 7 o'clock onwards (both location can be
found in more detail in our where we fly section) This allows new members
to come along and see some flying and discuss the latest
developments on the helicopter scene. The models we fly can
vary from quite simple and low cost, to very complex and at
times very expensive, running in to many hundreds of pounds.
The helicopters can be powered by small model engines around
9cc in capacity, which run on Methanol and Nitro methane;
these engines are very powerful and can fly models that
weigh up to 5 kg and a rotor span of more than 1.5 meters.
The latest developments now means we fly mainly electric
powered helicopters using Lithium polymer batteries at the
club, there is a new trend to fly the smaller helicopters
with a rotor span of about half a meter, again powered by an
electric motor.
3D is a new type of flying that has got a huge following,
what this means is that helicopters can be flown in ANY
direction, forward / backward / sideward / upside down as
well as the normal way up! There is that many combinations
it is really up to the skill of the pilot.
As a club we can give advice on how to start this hobby,
including setting up your helicopter and the lessons you
will need to learn to fly a model helicopter, it takes good
hand to eye coordination, and plenty of patience. We are
always looking for new members to join the club, at the
moment we are actively looking for new members for either
Indoor or Outdoor Memberships.
